Aggregate net short position time series for CORE LITHIUM, Core Lithium: the short position around the Finniss suspension

What the data showed

Unlike most of the companies in these case studies, CORE LITHIUM entered its window already heavily shorted: 8.60% of its units on issue on 3 Jan 2023. The reported position stayed near that level for a year and reached 13.83% on 10 Jan 2024.

It then fell for eighteen months, to a low of 1.48% on 16 May 2025 and 1.51% at the end of the window on 30 Jun 2025.

January 2024

In January 2024 the company announced that it would suspend mining at the Grants open pit at its Finniss project in the Northern Territory, in the middle of the wider downturn in the lithium sector. The window's high, 13.83%, falls in the days immediately after that announcement.

What a falling percentage can mean

ASIC's figure is reported short positions divided by total product in issue, so a decline has more than one possible cause: positions being closed, or more units being issued, or both. The published file does not separate them, and nothing on this page should be read as saying which happened. The company's own announcements to the ASX are the record for that.
