Corrections to the data

These get read first. Every figure we publish is traceable to a specific regulator file and publication date, so the most useful correction tells us which company, which date, and what you believe the number should be. We will check the figure against the archived source file for that day and reply either with the correction or with the source that supports the number as published.

Two things that look like errors but usually are not, and are worth checking before you write: a figure that changed after publication is normally a regulator revision, which we mark and record rather than overwrite silently; and a company that vanished from a league table has usually fallen below the disclosure threshold or left the reportable universe, which is not the same as its short positions closing. Both are explained in the methodology.

Questions about the data

If something on the site does not match another source, the difference is usually definitional rather than factual: regimes use different disclosure thresholds, different denominators and different publication delays. The disclosure thresholds and publication delay guides cover the common cases, and what the data cannot tell you covers the questions these numbers genuinely cannot answer. If none of those explain it, please do write. An unexplained discrepancy is something we want to know about.

Reusing the data

Outside the US, every company page offers its full history as a CSV download and its chart can be embedded; US figures are readable on the pages only. The underlying figures are official regulator publications and are not ours to license; our compilation, wording and presentation are. Attribution with a link is appreciated, and if you are building something that needs more than the CSVs provide, tell us what you need.

Privacy and legal

Privacy questions, including anything about the analytics we use, go to the same address; the privacy policy sets out what is and is not collected. Terms of use are on the terms page.

What we cannot help with

We are an independent site with no affiliation to FINRA, the SEC, the FCA, ASIC, any European regulator, or any exchange, issuer or fund. We cannot pass messages to a regulator, act on a disclosure obligation on your behalf, or comment on whether any position is a good or bad idea. HowShorted is a data reference: nothing here is investment advice, and we do not give any.
