Which ETF has the most shares short?

XLF has the largest reported count of any US exchange-traded product for settlement date 15 Sep 2026: 136,213,018 shares short, per FINRA's consolidated short interest report. FINRA lists it as State Street Financial Select; the regulator truncates issue names to 30 characters, so the full legal name of a fund is not in the file.

Why is there no short interest percentage for an ETF?

Because there is no defensible number to divide by. An exchange-traded product creates and redeems units continuously, so the number of shares in issue changes day to day and no filing fixes it for a settlement date. FINRA's shares-short count is exact and is shown verbatim; a percentage built on a moving share count would not be, so none is published. The same reasoning keeps these funds out of the ranked most-shorted league, which is a percentage of shares outstanding from SEC filings.

What does days to cover mean for a fund?

Days to cover is FINRA's own figure, published in the same file: the reported shares short divided by the security's average daily trading volume, or how many days of typical trading it would take for every short position to be bought back. Of the funds on this page, KBE carries the highest figure for 15 Sep 2026 at 15.56 days on 18,838,388 shares short. A high figure can come from a large position, from thin trading, or from both, and it forecasts nothing.

How often is this page updated?

FINRA member firms report their short positions as of the 15th and the last business day of each month, and FINRA publishes the consolidated figures roughly nine business days later. This page is rebuilt from each new report, and earlier settlements are re-read so that a figure FINRA revises is corrected here too. It currently shows settlement date 15 Sep 2026.

Most shorted ETFs

FINRA reports a shares-short count for every US exchange-traded product, twice a month by settlement date. This page ranks those funds by the count for settlement date 15 Sep 2026. Every figure here is a number of shares, never a percentage. An exchange-traded product creates and redeems units continuously, so its share count changes with demand and no filing fixes it for a given date. FINRA's count is exact; a percentage of it would not be, so none is shown here or on any fund's own page. That is also why these funds never appear in the most shorted US stocks league, which divides by shares outstanding from SEC filings.

285 of the 4,307 exchange-traded products in the 15 Sep 2026 report carry one million shares short or more, and only those are ranked below. The floor is there for the days-to-cover table: without it the top of that ranking is barely traded funds whose few thousand shares short divide into a tiny average volume, which describes their trading rather than the position. Funds under the floor still have their own pages, reachable from the shares short without a percentage hub and the US A to Z directory.

Which ETF has the most shares short?: XLF has the largest reported count of any US exchange-traded product for settlement date 15 Sep 2026: 136,213,018 shares short, per FINRA's consolidated short interest report. FINRA lists it as State Street Financial Select; the regulator truncates issue names to 30 characters, so the full legal name of a fund is not in the file.
Why is there no short interest percentage for an ETF?: Because there is no defensible number to divide by. An exchange-traded product creates and redeems units continuously, so the number of shares in issue changes day to day and no filing fixes it for a settlement date. FINRA's shares-short count is exact and is shown verbatim; a percentage built on a moving share count would not be, so none is published. The same reasoning keeps these funds out of the ranked most-shorted league, which is a percentage of shares outstanding from SEC filings.
What does days to cover mean for a fund?: Days to cover is FINRA's own figure, published in the same file: the reported shares short divided by the security's average daily trading volume, or how many days of typical trading it would take for every short position to be bought back. Of the funds on this page, KBE carries the highest figure for 15 Sep 2026 at 15.56 days on 18,838,388 shares short. A high figure can come from a large position, from thin trading, or from both, and it forecasts nothing.
How often is this page updated?: FINRA member firms report their short positions as of the 15th and the last business day of each month, and FINRA publishes the consolidated figures roughly nine business days later. This page is rebuilt from each new report, and earlier settlements are re-read so that a figure FINRA revises is corrected here too. It currently shows settlement date 15 Sep 2026.
