What the register showed

Spain's CNMV publishes each net short position of 0.5% or more of share capital with the holder's name, and the line here is the daily sum of those disclosures. It stood at 1.89% on 1 Jun 2023 and reached a low of 1.55% on 27 Jul 2023 during the following summer.

The high in this window is 4.38% on 14 Mar 2024. The sum fell back within weeks and ended the window at 2.34% on 31 Dec 2024.

January 2024 and after

On 9 January 2024 a short seller published a research report questioning the company's accounting. The company rejected the report's conclusions. The CNMV reviewed the company's financial reporting and published its conclusions in March 2024.

The register shows disclosed positions rising from the week of the report and peaking on 14 Mar 2024, then falling back through the spring. Nothing on this page says who was right about anything; it records what was published, and when.

Scale on a named register

The numbers here are much smaller than in the US case studies on this site, and that is mostly a measurement difference rather than a difference in how contested the company was. FINRA counts every short position in a US stock; the Spanish register counts only individual holders at or above 0.5%. A position spread across several holders who each stay under that line never appears at all, so a widely discussed episode can leave only a modest mark on the public record.
