What the register showed

France's AMF publishes each net short position of 0.5% or more of share capital with the holder's name, and the line here is the daily sum of those disclosures. It stood at 8.47% on 1 Jan 2024, reached 19.44% on 6 May 2024, and fell to 6.48% on 8 Nov 2024 before ending the window at 8.67% on 5 Dec 2024.

The restructuring

On 24 July 2024 the specialised Commercial Court of Nanterre opened accelerated safeguard proceedings so the company could carry out a pre-agreed financial restructuring. The court approved the plan on 24 October 2024, and the company announced its completion on 19 December 2024: about €2.9 billion of debt converted into shares, a gross debt reduction of about €2.1 billion, €1.75 billion of new financing, and no debt maturing before the end of 2029.

The named positions were highest in the spring, before the proceedings opened, and were well below half the spring peak by the time the plan was approved. The register shows the positions being reduced as the restructuring's terms became known; it does not say why any holder acted.

Why the record stops in December 2024

The conversion of debt into shares multiplied the number of shares in issue, which is the base every percentage on this page is measured against. On 6 and 9 December 2024, while the capital increases were being settled, the register printed a figure many times higher than anything it showed before or after, coinciding with the change in share count; this study stops at 5 December rather than chart it as a position. The company's original ISIN left the register on 17 December 2024, and its current listing has its own page on this site.
