FINRA short interest (US)

The US measure: broker-dealers report the short positions on their books as of two settlement dates a month, and FINRA publishes one consolidated total per security about nine business days later.

FINRA Rule 4560 requires member firms to report, for every equity security, the short positions in all customer and proprietary accounts as of settlement on the 15th and the last business day of each month. FINRA consolidates the reports and publishes a total per security, together with its own days-to-cover figure, on a published dissemination schedule.

It is a census, not a sample: there is no disclosure threshold, and no holders are named. We show it as a percentage of shares outstanding taken from each company's own SEC filings, so a US figure means "this share of the company's shares is sold short".
