Short interest report dates 2026: FINRA settlement and publication schedule

Official short interest is never a live number. Each regulator publishes on its own timetable, so "when is short interest updated" has a different answer in every market. The table below lists the next twelve months of US settlement and publication dates, and the sections after it give the cadence for every other market on this site.

Every date here is expected. We compute the dates from each regulator's published cadence rather than quoting a regulator's own calendar, and dates can move around public holidays.

United States: FINRA's twice-monthly cadence

Positions are counted as of two settlement dates each month: the 15th and the last business day, each rolled back to the preceding business day when it falls on a weekend or holiday. Firms then have two business days to report, and FINRA disseminates the consolidated figures about seven business days after that, roughly nine business days after settlement. Full detail is in US short interest, explained.

Twelve months from the start of the current month, so the first rows may already have passed. Publication dates assume nine business days and no public holidays in between; FINRA can publish a day either side.

United Kingdom: every working day

The FCA publishes one aggregate net short position per company per working day, at approximately 12:00 UK time, two working days after the position date (T+2). There is no report date to wait for: what you see on a Wednesday is generally Monday's positioning. See the FCA's ANSP, explained.

One UK date does run monthly: the Reportable Shares List, which decides which shares are in scope, is updated on the first working day of the month. The next update is expected on 2 Nov 2026.

Australia: every business day, four days behind

ASIC aggregates the reports it receives per product and publishes a file for each trade date on the fourth business day after it (T+4). A file appearing on a Friday describes the previous Monday, the longest lag of the daily markets. See Australia's short position data, explained.

Europe: whenever a position crosses the threshold

The French, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and Spanish registers are event-driven rather than a daily snapshot. A position becomes public when it crosses 0.5% of share capital, typically the following business day, so an individual position's date reflects when that position last changed, not when the register was last refreshed. See Europe's named short registers, explained.

The gap between the date a figure describes and the date it was published is the subject of its own guide: position date vs publication date.

Put the dates in your calendar

The same dates are published as a calendar file: report-dates.ics. Subscribe by URL (https://howshorted.com/calendar/report-dates.ics) in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook rather than downloading it once, and the expected settlement, publication and Reportable Shares List dates keep rolling forward in your own calendar.

Where to read the numbers

When a report lands, it appears here the same day. The most shorted US stocks table carries the latest settlement date's figures, and US short interest reports keeps one factual digest per settlement date, so you can read what changed between any two reports. US short interest data is owned and published by FINRA; this site is not affiliated with FINRA or the SEC.

Frequently asked questions

When is short interest updated?
It depends on the market. In the United States, twice a month: FINRA member firms report positions as of the 15th and the last business day of each month, and FINRA publishes the consolidated figures about nine business days after each settlement date. The UK and Australia publish every working day, and the European registers update as individual positions cross the 0.5% disclosure threshold.
What is the next US short interest report date?
The next expected settlement date is 15 Oct 2026 (mid-month positions), and the next expected FINRA publication is around 28 Oct 2026. Both are expected dates computed from the published cadence, not dates quoted from a regulator's calendar.
Why are all the dates marked expected?
Because we compute them from the cadence rules rather than reading them from a regulator's calendar. A settlement date that falls on a weekend or a holiday rolls back to the preceding business day, and a publication can move around public holidays, so treat every row as the expected date rather than a guarantee.
Does the UK publish short interest every day?
Yes. The FCA publishes one aggregate net short position per company per working day, at approximately 12:00 UK time, two working days after the position date. What changes monthly is the Reportable Shares List, which the FCA updates on the first working day of the month.
How far behind is the Australian data?
ASIC publishes each trade date's file on the fourth business day after it, so a file appearing on a Friday describes the previous Monday. That is the longest lag of the daily markets.
Can I get these dates in my own calendar?
Yes. Subscribe to the calendar file at howshorted.com/calendar/report-dates.ics in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook, and the expected settlement, publication and Reportable Shares List dates appear alongside your own events.
