Short Selling Regulation (SSR)
The EU regulation (236/2012) that created the 0.1% notification and 0.5% public disclosure thresholds for net short positions in shares, retained in UK law after Brexit and reformed there in 2026.
The SSR harmonised short position disclosure across the EU from November 2012: private notification to the national regulator at 0.1% of issued share capital, public named disclosure at 0.5%, and a ban on uncovered short sales of shares and sovereign debt. National regulators publish the resulting named registers, which this site aggregates for the markets it covers.
The UK carried the regulation into domestic law when it left the EU and then replaced its disclosure model in 2026, moving to an aggregated, anonymous publication at a 0.2% threshold.
